Waterville police warn residents of scam

WATERVILLE, Maine (WABI) – The City of Waterville and its surrounding neighbors need to keep their eye out for possible scammers.

Waterville Deputy Police Chief William Bonney said they received several complaints from citizens about someone in the Waterville Police Department asking them for money.

He said the purported scammer was telling people they missed their court date and requested money from them to deal with an issue civilly and not criminally.

Waterville Police say this is a scam.

We’re never going to call and ask you for money. So don’t fall for that. It is always a scam. No business is ever going to ask you to pay them in iTunes cards, gift cards, or anything like that. And if you have any question you can always call the police department. And you can ask us and we’ll verify,” said Bonney.

The deputy chief also says scammers can spoof the department’s phone and call people.

He said just hang up and call the police department for verification.
