Elderly Woman Scammed Out Of $10K In Gift Cards: Police

EAST END, NY โ€” An elderly Quogue woman was scammed out of $10,000 in Home Depot gift cards after she was contacted by someone who said she needed to buy them in order to clear child pornography off her computer, police said.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Riverhead Town police are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate three people who utilized the gift cards they obtained as part of the phone scam in February, police said.

An elderly Quogue woman was contacted electronically; she purchased the cards from Home Depot in Riverhead and provided the card information over the phone on February 15 at 3 p.m., police said.

Later that day, three individuals used the gift cards to make purchases at several Home Depot locations in Suffolk, Nassau, Queens and Kings counties.
